NPU family….It’s that time again. It has been too long since my last newsletter. NPU successfully hosted 2 amazing conferences in September and October. September, we hosted the Western States Troopers Conference in Lake Tahoe, then in October we hosted the National Troopers Coalition Conference in Las Vegas. Now that both conferences are over, we can now ramp up our efforts for the upcoming CBA negotiations and the 2025 Legislative session. Although I have been doing a lot of prep work with meetings and discussions with many of the politicians, it is time to start getting into details with the political leaders. Many of the legislators didn’t want to engage in high level talks until after the election was over.
A survey will be coming out soon that will help guide us through our upcoming CBA negotiations. You’ll receive an email with a link to the survey, the link will connect you to the survey for either Unit G (line level) or Unit L (Supervisors – Sgts and Lts) based on your rank in our system. We will make every effort to make sure you are linked to the correct survey. However, you may want to log into your NPU account and make updates to your member profile as needed to ensure you have access to the correct survey, especially if you recently were promoted.
Negotiations will likely begin (for both Units) in mid-January after the Governor’s recommended budget is announced. It was originally thought that we would start negotiations much earlier, but upon further consideration, we realized that negotiating with the state before they had budget info would be futile, and we would make no headway. Not a good strategy to discuss fiscal matters when we would get a ton of push back from the state. The National Troopers Coalition (NTC) has agreed to help us with negotiations this time around. With the NTC’s help, our current legal experts and our amazing NPU negotiating team, we are tremendously optimistic that we will continue to make strides forward. Stay tuned.
We will also be having an election soon for Unit L (Supervisors). There are 4 candidates that showed interest, and we will make that announcement soon. The positions for Unit L will be as follows: Chairman, Vice Chairman (North), Vice Chairman (South), and Vice Chairman (At Large). We are currently working on making some adjustments and changes to the NPU bylaws to accommodate our newly formed Unit L group.
Getting back to legislative priorities, I recently met with several top law makers, as well as Governor Lombardo in Las Vegas. I plan on meeting with them and Northern Nevada Legislators again in the next few months before the session begins. And countless times during session….the squeaky wheel gets the grease! It is our goal to make sure we speak with as many political leaders and deal makers as possible, and hope for a great outcome at sessions end.
Over the last few months, your NPU Executive Team has met with several new vendors and supporters. NPU will be introducing new member benefits. On the way are new partners for financial planning, real estate needs (buying, selling, and rentals) as well as supplemental insurance options.
The online store is coming together nicely as well and should be up in the next month. NPU challenge coins and NPU patches will be available soon as well. We are also in the process of discussing building a phone app tied to our website for members. This will make everything NPU so easy to access, even easier than our new website.
Lastly, I want to make sure everyone knows exactly what your NPU team is doing for its membership. We do much of the work on our own time. Phone calls. Emails. Text messages. It’s all to help our NPU brothers and sisters. And as usual, anyone that is interested in getting involved, reach out to us and we can give you any info you need.
Thank you for your continued membership and wishing you and your families a Happy Thanksgiving!
Stay safe out there,
Dan
